Golfer Fred Couples became the first American to win the Dubai Desert Classic, firing a flawless 6-under-par 66 in beating Colin Montgomerie of Scotland by three strokes at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Couples completed four trips around the Emirates Golf Club at 268, 20-underpar, and received $112,500 from the total purse of $675,000.

Montgomerie, who had started the final round tied for the lead with Couples, also birdied No. 18, bringing a big smile after a disappointing day of missed putts. He shot a 69.

Pat Bradley, producing one of the best iron shots of her career on the 17th hole, shot a bogey-free, 4-under-par 68 to beat Beth Daniel by a stroke and win the LPGA HealthSouth Inaugural at Orlando, Fla.

Bradley birdied three holes on the last nine at Walt Disney World’s Eagle Pines to leave Daniel the runner-up for the second straight week.

Bradley finished at 5-under 211 for three rounds and earned $67,500. Daniel was at 212.

Phil Mickelson recovered from an inconsistent front nine to capture the Northern Telecom Open at Tucson, Ariz., to become the first man to win the same tournament as an amateur and a professional.

In beating Jim Gallagher Jr. by one stroke, Mickelson shot a 4-under-par 68 for a four-round total of 269. Mickelson parred the last three holes of the $1.25 million tournament.
