‘On Bended Knee’ Caps Billboard Chart

Jan Deknock/Knight-Ridder

Chalk up yet another great chart week for the harmony quartet Boyz II Men, who now have spent the past month at No. 1 - and six weeks in total - with their latest big ballad, “On Bended Knee.”

And if Ini Kamoze hadn’t snuck in there for a two-week run as champ with the dance ditty “Here Comes the Hotstepper” (now No. 6), the Boyz by now would have racked up an amazing 22 straight weeks in the top spot, first with “I’ll Make Love to You” (14 weeks) and then “On Bended Knee.” But even so, being at the top for 20 of the past 22 weeks is still an impressive feat.

The Boyz also continue to show surprising strength on the top albums list, where their “II” is now back up to No. 2, ahead of such major rock releases as Pearl Jam’s “Vitalogy” (down this week from No. 2 to No. 3), the Eagles’ “Hell Freezes Over” (up from No. 5 to No. 4) and Green Day’s “Dookie” (down from No. 4 to No. 5).

The only album still ahead of “II” is “The Hits” by country superstar Garth Brooks, now in his third week at No. 1 on the mainstream chart. But he likely will be able to enjoy that status for only a week or two more, because the post-holiday doldrums are about to be broken by a barrage of hot new albums.
