Crack Cocaine, Lots Of Cash Seized In North Side Raid

Kelly Mcbride Staff Writer

Spokane drug detectives raided a North Side home Jan. 18 and seized 9 ounces of crack cocaine and a large amount of cash.

The house, at W828 Mansfield, was a storage location for several local drug dealers, detectives said.

After getting a search warrant, members of the Spokane Drug Task Force and the Spokane police special investigations unit raided the Mansfield home. No one was home at the time, said Sheriff’s Lt. Clyde Ries.

That same evening officers raided a second home on the South Hill, arresting four people accused of being connected to the drug ring.

Dwayne Maxted, 18, and Dwight Weems, 20, both of Seattle; Stephanie Hinton, 39, and Antonio Jones, 24, both of Spokane, were all arrested and face a variety of drugrelated charges.

Security guards threatened

Two security guards for the Safeway store at N4512 Market were threatened Jan. 18 when they tried to stop two customers from stealing cigarettes.

The guards watched the pair, a man and a woman, conceal the cigarettes in their clothing and then pay for several other items, said police spokesman Dick Cottam.

The guards approached the pair as they left the store, and the man pulled out a knife and waved it, Cottam said.

He then ran toward the guards as they tried to force the woman back into the store.

The pair escaped in an early 1980s red Mazda RX 7.

Police arrest intruder

Spokane police responding to a reported burglary Sunday, discovered an intruder inside the house, his hands bleeding from breaking a window to get in.

John M. Judge, 28, W1523 Knox, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on one charge of residential burglary and one charge of attempted residential burglary.

Police found him in the kitchen of a home in the 1200 block of North Madison after a neighbor reported the break-in, Cottam said. Officers discovered the house next door had also been burglarized, he said.

Loud stereo confiscated

Police arrested a North Side resident Saturday morning after the man refused to turn down his stereo.

Officers could hear Daniel W. Randall’s stereo two doors down from his E1407 Rich house, Cottam said.

When officers knocked on Randall’s door, he refused to answer, yelled obscenities and turned the music up louder.

Officers finally obtained a search warrant, broke down the door, arrested Randall for violating the noise ordinance and turned off the stereo.

They confiscated the sound system, which included six speakers - two so large it took two men to carry them, Cottam said.

Burglary suspects arrested

Spokane police arrested two men Friday night shortly after a break-in at an apartment on West Spofford, Cottam said.

Ronnie Lee Fields, 20, of W1523 Nora and Gary L. Circle, 20, of N612 Elm, were booked into the Spokane County Jail on burglary charges. Fields was also cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

A witness who reported the break-in pointed out the two as the suspects, Cottam said.

On one of the suspects officers found a screwdriver that possibly was used to break open the door, Cottam said.

Youth surrenders after chase

A 16-year-old boy led a sheriff’s deputy on a chase through Hillyard Jan. 15 before stopping at his home and surrendering.

Deputy Tom Edelbrock was driving west on Lincoln Road at 1 a.m. when he spotted a car coming in the other direction, swerving back and forth.

The car weaved in and out of side streets, arterials and alleys for about 10 minutes. It finally pulled up in front of a house at E2904 Columbia and stopped.

The teen-age boy who had been driving the car told Edelbrock he saw the lights and heard the sirens, but did not stop, Ries said.

He was arrested for attempting to elude an officer, a felony charge, Ries said.
