Local Tax Cap Bill Gets Introduction

From Staff And Wire Reports

A bill to allow local voters to enact property tax caps was OK’d for introduction by the House Revenue and Taxation Committee Wednesday.

Rep. Jim Kempton, R-Albion, said a statewide cap on tax increases would be the quickest way to provide property tax relief, but also potentially the most disruptive.

“One cap doesn’t fit all in the state of Idaho,” Kempton said.

His bill would allow voters to set limits on the property tax portion of local governments’ budgets by a majority vote.

Five other bills sponsored by the State Tax Commission also were introduced Wednesday, including a bill to make public notices of tax changes easier to read and understand.

All the bills will return to the committee for hearings before they may be considered by the full House.
