Modesto Spencer Rogers Year: Senior Sport: Basketball Position: Guard

Modesto Spencer quit the Rogers team once. He’s getting a second chance now, one that is improving the Pirates’ chances of making postseason play.

Spencer is averaging more than 10 points in his four games back and Rogers has beaten two of the three teams tied for second place.

“I turned out, went to practices and the jamboree but the rent wasn’t getting paid and I had to go to work,” Spencer said of his decision to quit.

When his girlfriend got more hours at her job, the door opened for Spencer to return, if the team would have him. He had to ask twice to be accepted.

A 6-foot guard with springs, he improves the Pirates’ rebounding and he has taken the tough assignments on defense.

“The difference in the Modesto early and the Modesto now is he’s humble,” Rogers coach Rick Mergenthaler said. “He’s a hard worker and he cares more about the team than he does about himself. He’s working hard to make sure his grades are right, working hard beyond basketball. He’s come back with a pleasant attitude.”

Spencer appreciates the opportunity to contribute.

“I’m real thankful because the kids gave me another chance,” he said. “We’re working together. They know how much I love the game. They’re real supportive.”
