Workshop Helps Deal With Addictive Behavior

Rick Bonino Staff Writer

A workshop on dealing with addictions of all types - from alcohol to gambling to exercise to work - will be presented Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at First Presbyterian Church, S318 Cedar.

Counselors Dick and Connie Silk will discuss how addictive behaviors are symptoms of underlying problems, and how people can make better choices for themselves.

The workshop is free, although donations are appreciated. For information, call 838-0152.

Kid talk

When a child starts to stutter, it could be just a passing phase - or the beginning of a lifelong problem.

“Stuttering and Your Child: A Videotape for Parents,” from the Stuttering Foundation of America, explains the difference using actual children as examples and offers advice for parents from speech experts.

The video is available at the main Spokane Public Library, W906 Main, and at the Spokane County Library District’s Valley branch, E12004 Main.

Copies also can be purchased for a $5 shipping and handling fee by calling toll-free to 1-800-992-9392.

Heart health

“The Heart Institute Food Plan,” a diet and exercise guide featuring recipes for healthier living from the Heart Institute of Spokane, is now available at area Tidyman’s grocery stores.

Several community events are also planned during February in observance of Heart Month. On Wednesday at 8 p.m., KSPS-TV, Channel 7, will air a live one-hour program, “Take It To Heart,” featuring a panel of experts who will answer questions from callers.

For a schedule of events and further information about healthy hearts, call the institute at 625-3000.

For sweethearts

If you were planning on buying flowers, jewelry or a Trisha Yearwood compact disc in February - as Valentine’s Day presents, perhaps? - you can help the American Heart Association in the process.

The association will receive a portion of the proceeds from sales throughout the month over the tollfree For Heart’s Sake hotline, 1-800-9-HEART-0.

Products include pins specially designed by Zales Jewelers, floral arrangements from FTD Direct and country singer Yearwood’s new album, “Thinkin’ About You.”
