Alexie Plans Native Writers Project With Lila Wallace Award Winnings

Dan Webster Staff Writer

Wellpinit native Sherman Alexie has been given another award. The author of “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven” and other books of poems and stories has been named one of 10 Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Funds award winners.

Each winner receives a total of $105,000 to be paid in three annual installments.

Besides Alexie, winners include Christopher Durang, Ian Frazier, Jessica Hagedorn, bell hooks, June Jordan, W.S. Merwin, David Mura, Lee Smith and Wakako Yamauchi.

Each award winner is expected to work with specific non-profit cultural, educational and community organizations to foster a greater appreciation for literature.

Alexie, who now lives in Seattle, plans to link up with the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation and organize the Seattle Native American Writers Outreach Project. The project will pair more wellknown Native American writers with local writers to produce readings, performances and workshops for Headstart students, runaways, homeless children and the elderly.

More books for Gonzaga

Thanks to a donation of some 500 books, Gonzaga University now boasts one of the most complete collections of materials published by Ye Galleon Press of Fairfield, Wash.

Ye Galleon was founded in 1964 by publisher Glen Adams. It specializes in family and local histories and various out-of-print works. The gift was made by the Rev. Edward J. Kowrach, a long-time collaborator with Adams.
