Still No Place Like Pauley For Cal

Associated Press

Pac-10

Tremaine Fowlkes scored a careerhigh 24 points and California kept up its mastery of UCLA on the fourthranked Bruins’ homecourt with a 100-93 victory Saturday.

Cal (3-4 Pac-10, 11-5 overall), the only team to beat UCLA at home last season, won its third straight at Pauley Pavilion. UCLA (6-2, 12-2) had its six-game winning streak snapped.

Fowlkes, a 6-foot-6 freshman out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, single-handedly lifted the Golden Bears out of a tight game with nine straight points midway through the second half.

UCLA played catch-up most of the first half and never led in the second. The Bruins got within one on a George Zidek basket with 15:31 left and tied the game three times after that. Fowlkes broke the last tie with a 3-pointer that started a 14-3 run, including 12 points of his own, and put Cal ahead 77-66 with 7:14 to play.
