Jones Will Co-Host Tribute To Top Names In Popular Music
Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey, with four nominations each, and Ace of Base, All-4-One, Counting Crows and Salt-N-Pepa, with three each, lead the nominees in 22 categories for the 22nd annual presentation of “The American Music Awards.”
The three-hour show airs from Hollywood’s Shrine Civic Auditorium tonight beginning at 8 on ABC (KXLY-Channel 4 out of Spokane).
The event honors musical artists in pop/rock, soul/ rhythm & blues, country, heavy metal, rap/hip-hop, adult contemporary and alternative music.
Tom Jones, Lorrie Morgan and Queen Latifah are the show’s hosts. Many nominees will appear as either performers or presenters.
Prince will receive the annual Award of Merit honoring an artist for outstanding contributions to the musical entertainment of the American public. Previous winners include Whitney Houston, James Brown, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, The Beach Boys, Paul McCartney, Loretta Lynn, Michael Jackson, Kenny Rogers, Stevie Wonder, Benny Goodman, Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond and rock promoter Bill Graham.
Recipients of American Music Awards are determined by a poll of record buyers in the United States.
