Tobacco Investments Targeted

Associated Press

A bill introduced in the Senate on Monday would prohibit investment of state pension funds in companies that manufacture tobacco products.

SB5679 says, “The Legislature finds the investment of public pension funds in business firms that manufacture tobacco is inconsistent with its goals of maintaining and improving the health of Washington residents while making health care affordable.”

The measure would not require the state Investment Board to divest itself of current investments in companies manufacturing tobacco products, but it would ban new investments starting next Jan. 1.
