Play Hard, Drive Late…Die Early

Charlie Powell

Hunters, anglers, hikers, climbers and other outdoors enthusiasts are known for working late and driving long and hard to get to their favorite places.

But driving while fatigued can be as deadly as driving drunk.

“Studies done on the New York State Thruway showed that up to half of all fatalities were caused by drivers falling asleep,” said Ed Sharman, safety manager for the Inland Automobile Association.

To alert all motorists to the hazards of driving while fatigued, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has prepared a free booklet entitled, “Wake Up!”

The booklet features an awareness test for drowsy driving, tips for dealing with fatigue and a section on sleep disorders.

Sorry, no tips on where the fish are biting at sunset.

Copies of “Wake Up!” can be obtained by calling AAA in Spokane at 455-3400.
