Victims’ Records Sought

Associated Press

Investigators have asked the University of Idaho for medical records of two graduate students slain in May and also for computer Internet accounts of one of the victims.

Wenkai Li, a graduate student from Beijing, is charged in Latah County with two counts of first degree murder in the May 29 stabbing deaths of Idaho doctoral student Ning Li, 36, and his wife, Xia Ge, 35. Ning Li was pursuing a degree in physics and computer science. His wife was about to begin graduate level studies.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled in 2nd District Court at Moscow July 11 for Wenkai Li, who was arrested in Laramie, Wyo., June 5.

Besides the medical records of the victims, investigators also have issued a subpoena to UI Student Health Services and Moscow Family Medicine for medical records of Wenkai Li and his girlfriend, Xiaohui Pan. Police said Pan also is a graduate student from China but was on the East Coast the day of the slayings.

In a warrant for Wenkai Li’s arrest, officers said he allegedly admitted committing the slayings because “Ning Li began to say insulting things about his girlfriend.”

The Moscow-Pullman Daily News said friends reported Wenkai Li was distraught about injuries suffered in an Oregon car crash in March.

In his application for indigency , allowing him to have a court-appointed attorney, Li said he had medical bills of $1,465 from the crash and about $465 remained unpaid.

Investigators also have subpoenaed records from Ning Li’s Internet account at the university. Reports indicate Ning Li was a frequent Internet user up to the day of the slayings. Investigators said his correspondence may shed light on the events leading up to his death.
