Gallagher Nails Putt On Tourney’s Final Hole To Escape With Win

Jim Gallagher recovered from a sand trap on the last hole and sank a 12-foot putt Sunday to avoid a three-way playoff and win the FedEx-St. Jude Golf Classic in Memphis, Tenn.

Gallagher closed with a 1-over-par 72 for a 17-under 267 total, edging Jay Delsing (67) and Ken Green (68) by a stroke. Gene Sauers started the round a stroke behind Gallagher but shot a 73 to finish at 269.

Gallagher, who won $225,000 in capturing his second title this year, parred the final five holes. His final round included three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey.

Pullman’s Kirk Triplett shot a 69 to finish with a four-day total of 272. He earned $20,625.

Michelle McGann rallied from two strokes down on the final hole of regulation and outlasted Katie PetersonParker in a three-hole playoff to win the $550,000 Youngstown-Warren LPGA Classic in Warren, Ohio.

McGann sank a 3-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole at the Avalon Lakes Golf Course after Peterson-Parker missed a 5-foot birdie attempt.

McGann, whose only other tour victory came at the Sara Lee Classic in May, earned $82,500 and took second place on the 1995 money list with $354,357.

Robin Walton of Clarkston finished with a 72 for a total of 217.
