Baby Dies Inside Hot School Bus

Associated Press

A 6-month-old girl was found dead on a sweltering school bus, where she had mistakenly been left for much of the day.

Esmeralda Guerra died in her safety seat Wednesday of hyperthermia, Blount County Coroner Greg Long said.

The infant was one of about 40 children who rode the bus 10 miles from Allgood to Cleveland to attend day care or summer schoolwhile their parents worked.

The temperature outside was about 90 degrees, and it was even hotter on the bus, though all the windows were down. The heat “just overwhelmed her system,” Long said.

No immediate charges were filed.
