Local Winners Named In Fiddlers’ Contest

The National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest was recently held in Weiser, Idaho. Inland Northwest winners are:

Junior-Junior Division: Aubrey Richmond, age 12, Colville, Wash., second place; Dennis Ludiker, 11, Spokane, fifth place.

Junior Division: Luke Bulla, 15, Northport, Wash., first; Jenny Anne Bulla, 14, Northport, second; and Chip Gilliam, 15, Harvard, Idaho, fifth.

Senior-Senior Division: Marjorie McFaul, 70, Rathdrum, Idaho, third.

Bonnie Sue Teich, 4, Spokane, received the Youngest Fiddler Award. Tony Ludiker, Spokane, was named Best Dressed in Tuesday evening’s competition.

Julie Taylor, eighth-grade science teacher at Riverside Middle School in Chattaroy, has been named Eastern Washington University’s Teacher of the Month for May. She was nominated by student Cassie Scoles, who spearheaded a signature drive among her classmates in support of the nomination. Cassie says that Mrs. Taylor has inspired her to become a teacher so that she, too, can affect the lives of so many others.

The following Stevens County 4-H members competed in the 4-H Livestock Judging contest held at the Spokane Junior Livestock in May. This show is used as one of the qualifying events for members who want to judge at the State 4-H Fair in Puyallup, Wash.

The results were as follows: Jody Esvelt, Hilltoppers, 262; Heather Kuk, Moonlight Riders, 288; Tanna Skidmore, Hunters, 354; Josslin Skidmore, Hunters, 332; Wayne Cornwall, Hunters, 330; Doreen Morgan, Hilltoppers, 265; and Jenna Barker, Hilltoppers, 264. All scores were out of a possible 400.

Three Medical Lake High School students recently participated in the 47th Annual Music in May Festival hosted by Pacific University’s Department of Music. They are: Mandy Ewing, Jessica Martin and Shea’lyn Pruitt, all sopranos.

Noah Malgeri, Spokane, received the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company award at a recent ceremony at Boston University’s Division of Military Education. He is a cadet in the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps at the college.

Cindy Barlett, a 1991 graduate of Newport (Wash.) High School, was awarded the 1995 Leeds Prize in Geology at Whitman College, Walla Walla. She recently graduated with a degree in geology.

Shanni Burnette, a Spokane Community College automotive student, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from North American Council for Automotive Teachers.

Leo’s Photography held a photo and essay contest for selected Inland Northwest Elementary students this spring to illustrate how sports can benefit children. Students were given single-use cameras to capture images of children playing and enjoying sport, then asked to compose an essay explaining the benefits of sports to kids. Ms. Gothmann’s kindergarten class at South Pines Elementary in Spokane was the essay winner. Mrs. Rickman’s fourth-grade class at Kiona-Benton City Elementary in Benton City, Wash., was the winner of the photo contest. Each school was awarded $250 for playground equipment.
