Christian Scholar To Tackle Major Theological Questions

A visiting evangelical Christian scholar will address some of the biggest questions next weekend during three days of appearances at Valley Fourth Memorial Church.

Doug Geivett, who contributed a chapter to “Jesus Under Fire” - the conservative response to the controversial findings of the Jesus Seminar - will taclkle themes such as the existence of God and whether following Jesus is the only path to salvation.

“It’s important for people to realize there is a credible basis for belief,” he said.

His series of talks is being called “In Defense of the Faith.”

The Jesus Seminar, a group composed primarily of liberal scholars, contended that Jesus actually said only a small percentage of the things attributed to him. Geivett and his colleagues shot back that the seminar group represents a minority view.

The Rev. John Underhill, pastor at Valley Fourth Memorial, said the guest speaker is exceptionally well qualified to address some of the hottest issues in contemporary Christianity.

Geivett is an associate professor of philosophy at California’s Talbot School of Theology. He is the author of “Evil and the Evidence for God.” He is a former Spokane resident and his mother and in-laws live here.

His schedule:

Friday, 7 p.m.-9 p.m. “Apologetics, who needs it?” and “A case for Christianity, an overview.”

Saturday, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.: “Does God exist?” “Is Jesus the only savior?” “Why is there evil?” and “Jesus’ approach to intellectual opposition.”

And on Sunday, July 16, he will address Sunday school classes from 9. a.m. until 10:15 a.m. and then be the guest speaker at the church’s regular 10:30 a.m. service.

The church is at 2303 S. Bowdish Road.
