Lure Of The Trail

Hiking

Asked to name “very important” factors in choosing a ski resort to visit during summer, Snow Country magazine readers said they wanted a place that’s pretty - and pretty cheap.

But accessibility to hiking was the next most important factor.

Scenery was a factor to 64 percent of respondents, cost to 47 percent, hiking to 46 percent and biking to 41 percent.

Among all the outdoor guides and nature books sold in Eastern Washington and North Idaho Forest Service offices, the top seller is “100 Hikes in the Inland Northwest,” by Rich Landers and Ida Rowe Dolphin, according to Hosey Horton, spokesman for the Forest Service information office in Spokane.

The office at 400 S. Jefferson, has maps, books, permits and other information for all the forests in the Northwest. Info: 353-2574.
