Maryland Athletes Suspended

Compiled From Wire Services

Maryland starting quarterback Scott Milanovich and four other university athletes were suspended by the NCAA for gambling on college sporting events.

The school will appeal the two harshest judgements of the five, both of which are believed to be the most severe sanctions ever levied against a Division I athlete for a gambling-related offense.

Four of the five players involved in the suspensions agreed to allow the school to release their names. A fifth - a football player given an eight-game suspension - refused to grant his permission.

That player, according to a school source, is Milanovich, a senior who owns many of the school’s all-time passing records. The other athletes involved were basketball reserve Matt Raydo and football starters Jermaine Lewis, Jaron Hairston and Farad Hall.

Raydo was suspended for 20 games while Lewis, Hairston and Hall will each miss one.
