Engineers To Outline Likely Salmon Plans

From Staff And Wire Reports

Engineers will explain possible ways of getting young salmon safely around hydropower turbines at a meeting next Tuesday in Spokane.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will present information about “surface collection systems” that could be installed in lower Snake River dams.

They also will discuss the possibility of dropping the water level of reservoirs to natural river conditions, in order to flush the endangered fish to the ocean.

The meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cavanaugh’s Inn at the Park, 303 W. North River Drive. There also will be an open house for people interested in the subject, scheduled from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the same location.

The Corps of Engineers operates the dams, a major cause of declines in Snake River chinook and sockeye salmon.

The Spokane meeting is the last of four the agency is holding throughout the region regarding ways to improve migration conditions for the fish.
