Gilrein Hammers Hillyard

Jeremy Gilrein went 3 for 3 to lead Scott’s Custom Homes to a 12-6 win over the Hillyard Boosters at Shadle’s Al K. Jackson Field on Tuesday.

Clinging to an 8-6 lead going into the top of the seventh, Scott’s Custom Homes scored four runs to put the game away.

Also, M & L Construction beat Key Bank 10-2 as Ray Hattenburg, Steve Fish and Evan Thomas each drove in two runs. Hattenburg and Fish also scored a run.

Golf

Pepperdine senior Carson Mooney, from Boise, shot a 2-under-par 70 to win medalist honors in qualifying for the 94th Pacific Golf Association Men’s Amateur tournament at West Linn, Ore.

First-day leader Scott Johnson of Kennewick shared third place at 142. John Cook of Avondale on Hayden and Coeur d’Alene Alene finished at 146.

The low 64 qualifiers advanced to the tournament’s match-play segment, which will begin today and run through Saturday. It took a score of 158 to get into a playoff for the final match-play berth.

Britney Holt of Spokane shot a two-day total of 156 to win the Washington Junior Golf Association’s District Tournament at the Spokane Country Club.

In the 15-17 division, Holt shot 78 on both Monday and Tuesday. Holt outdistanced Jennifer Hatley (173) and Hillary Prugh (175), who finished second and third, in girls 15-17.

In boys’ 15-17 play, Kyle Kelly shot a two-day total 141 to win.

Spokane’s Andy Hastings shot a 7-over-par 78 in the first round of the American Junior Golf Association’s Rolex Tournament of Champions at the Innisbrook Hilton Resort at Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Hockey

Spokane Chiefs center Darren Sinclair has been invited to training camp by the NHL Vancouver Canucks, Chiefs general manager Tim Speltz said.

“Every player wants to be drafted but getting to camp is the big thing,” Speltz said.

Sinclair is expected back in Spokane for his 19-year-old season. The Chiefs open training camp Aug. 24.

Youth soccer

Nick Bozo’s not clowning around.

In two games for the Spokane Breakers at the USA Soccer Cup in Minneapolis, Bozo has scored all three of the team’s goals. Tuesday, the Breakers’ U-14 team defeated Andover (Minn.) 2-0. Monday, Bozo scored in a 1-1 tie against San Francisco.
