Governor Blamed For Massacre

Hoisting gray cardboard coffins and crude wooden crosses, some 1,200 people marched Friday to demand the resignation of the governor they blame for a June massacre of 17 peasants.

“He should go! He should go!” members of the leftist Democratic Revolution Party chanted as they marched before the Guerrero state office of Gov. Ruben Figueroa.

“Our promise to the people of Guerrero is to march with them until Figueroa falls,” proclaimed Mario Salcedo, secretary general of the party, known as the PRD. Hundreds of peasants, housewives, and university students cheered.

Such protests have occurred almost daily in different parts of this southwestern state since police killed 17 peasants on their way to an opposition protest in the mountains north of the Pacific resort of Acapulco.
