Nightclub Fracas Sidelines Vaughn

Mo Vaughn, the major-league home run and RBIs leader, sustained a bruised left eye when he was assaulted at a nightclub early Friday morning, the Boston Red Sox said.

Vaughn missed his first game of the year Friday night.

The incident occurred as Vaughn was defending his girlfriend at the club after Thursday night’s 9-8 loss to the Texas Rangers, Red Sox manager Kevin Kennedy said.

The team said the unidentified girlfriend also was assaulted.

Royals dump Lind

The Kansas City Royals asked waivers on second baseman Chico Lind, and other major league teams have three days to decide if they want to pick up his $2.6 million salary.

Lind, the 1992 Gold Glove winner for the Pittsburgh Pirates, hasn’t played since June 2 when he left the Royals without notifying team officials.

Indians 1-7, A’s 0-6

Cleveland

Carlos Baerga drove in the only run in the first game and hit one of Cleveland’s three home runs in the nightcap as the Indians swept a doubleheader from Oakland.

The Indians, winners of 12 their last 16 games, improved the best start in franchise history to 48-21. Oakland has lost nine of 12 overall and eight straight against Cleveland.

Cleveland reliever Jose Mesa finished both games, giving him 23 saves in 23 chances.

Angels 7, Tigers 3

Detroit

J.T. Snow and Garret Anderson homered on consecutive pitches to break a sixth-inning tie and California went on to defeat Detroit.

Snow broke an 0-for-14 slump with the two-run homer, his 12th, after the Tigers had rallied to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth.

Twins 11, Yankees 4 New York Pedro Munoz drove in four runs and Brad Radke won his third straight start as Minnesota thumped New York.

Munoz had a sacrifice fly in the first inning, a two-run double in the fifth and an RBI single in Minnesota’s five-run sixth.

Red Sox 5, Rangers 2

Boston

Tim Wakefield (8-1) picked up his fourth win in his last four starts and Chris Donnels, making his first start of the season, drove in two runs as Boston downed Texas.

Royals 7, Orioles 2

Baltimore

Tom Gordon pitched eight strong innings and Bob Hamelin hit a threerun homer as Kansas City beat Baltimore.

Brewers 8, White Sox 7

Milwaukee

Greg Vaughn hit a 444-foot homer and tied a career-high with six RBIs as Milwaukee built a sixrun lead then hung on to beat Chicago.

Clearing the bases

Alan Trammell of Detroit doubled in the sixth inning for his 2,300th career hit…. Tim Raines of Chicago tied Brady Anderson’s league record by stealing his 36th consecutive base…. Minnesota has made just seven errors in its last 28 games…. New York’s Wade Boggs was charged with a throwing error, ending his personal 78-game errorless streak.
