Obituaries

James Howell Hope, Idaho

Cremation service with military honors for James R. Howell, 77, will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punch Bowl, Honolulu, Hawaii, at a later date.

Mr. Howell, who was born in Salt Lake City, died June 19 at his home on the Hope Peninsula, Hope.

He competed in ski jumping, cross country, downhill, and slalom skiing from 1931 to 1942 in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. He met his wife, Donna Keller, on the ski circuit and they were married in 1943.

He served in World War II with the Army’s 10th Mountain Division, with a recommendation from the National Ski Association.

He taught skiing, mountaineering, rock climbing and winter survival techniques at Camp Hale, Colo.

He was later transferred to Fort Ord, Calif., with the Amphibious Technical Force with missions in the Pacific Theater in the Aleutians and Kiska Islands. He was honored for his outstanding survival techniques.

He engaged in the Mount Belvedere and Po Valley spearheads in the Italian Alps. He was discharged in 1945 and reactivated in the Army Reserves. He retired from the Army in 1978, after 25 years of service. He was a Purple Heart recipient and also received the Combat Infantryman’s Award for valor in the face of the enemy.

In the interim years following World War II, he operated his own office machine business in Utah, Washington, Wyoming and Colorado. He also was affiliated with a Colorado firm which designed and sold ski lifts and ski slopes in many areas of the United States.

He retired in 1990 and moved to Hope with his wife.

He was a member of the Mount Olympus and Utah ski clubs.

Survivors include his wife, at the home; four sons, James of Alabama, Michael and William of California, and Jeffrey of Hawaii; a brother, Donald of California; and four grandchildren.

Elsie Mae Adams Post Falls

Funeral Mass for Elsie Mae Adams, 75, will be today at 1:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Adams, who was born in Joseph, Ore., died Tuesday at home.

She married Richard Adams in Coeur d’Alene in 1940 and they made their home in Post Falls. Mr. Adams died in 1982.

She was a devoted housewife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, making wedding cakes, and working with Camp Fire girls.

Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by a daughter, an infant son, five sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include her son, Dick Adams of Post Falls; two daughters, Virginia Keopple of Post Falls and Doty Dean of Hayden Lake, Idaho; one brother, Vern Hamby of Everett; one sister, Millie Fisher of Post Falls; one granddaughter, and five great-grandchildren.

Felice Pasley Spokane

Memorial service for M. Felice Pasley, 88, is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of St. John The Evangelist. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in New York City, Mrs. Pasley died July 10.

She was a 76-year Spokane resident, and had served as the branch executive of the Northeast Region Childrens Home Society, and retired in 1972 after 30 years.

She was a member of The Cathedral of St. John The Evangelist, the Social Service Guild of the Cathedral and the Soroptimist Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Social Service Guild of The Cathedral of St. John The Evangelist.

Charlotte McGilvra Deer Park

Service for Charlotte M. McGilvra, 70, is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Deer Park, where she was a member. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery, Deer Park.

Mrs. McGilvra, who died Wednesday, was born in Sunnyside, Wash.

She was chairwoman of the Worship Committee and Church Missions, and a member of the church choir.

She was a graduate of Valley (Wash.) High School and served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II.

Mrs. McGilvra is survived by her husband of 48 years, Cecil McGilvra; three daughters, Connie Powell of Idaho Falls, and Mary Johnson and Cecilia Dixson, both of Spokane; her father, Elmer Sisseck of Chewelah, Wash.; one sister, Margaret Jones of Chewelah; and two brothers, Robert Sisseck of Evans, Wash., and James Sisseck of Spokane.

Milton Corbin Hayden, Idaho

No service is planned for Milton Martin Corbin, 62, who died Thursday at home following an extended illness. English Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Corbin was born in Whitehall, Mont., in 1933 and lived in various Montana towns.

He moved to the area in 1971 from Plains, Mont. He worked dirt construction and later worked for a railroad at Cole Docks as a railroad section hand. He was also a logger and concrete construction worker.

Mr. Corbin was an Army veteran and enjoyed hunting, fishing and guns.

Survivors include three brothers, Jerry and Rob of Hayden, and Rick of Post Falls; five sisters, Rose Marie Porter and Caralea Erickson of Hayden, Bonnie Landis of Lewiston, Connie Corkin of Canby, Ore., and Sue Crever of Billings, Mont.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Florence Watters Spokane

Private service for Florence R. Watters, 69, was held.

Mrs. Watters, who died July 7, was born in Cashmere.

A homemaker, she had lived in Spokane for 24 years.

She is survived by three daughters, Olivia Olsen of Charlo, Mont., Karen Ingraham of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Leyla Warren of Black Forest, Colo.; her mother, Mabel Abbott of Cashmere; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Johnny Hagan Jr. Nga Hong Thi Pham Spokane

Service for Johnny “Sang” Hagan Jr., 26, and Nga Thi Hong Pham, 23, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South with cremation to follow.

They were both born in Vietnam.

The couple were shot to death in their north Spokane apartment Monday morning.

They had immigrated to Spokane from Vietnam five years ago. Mr. Hagan worked odd jobs, picked berries and rented Asian videos from his apartment.

They are survived by one son, Johnny Hagan III, and one daughter, Diana Hagan, both at home; his mother, Chon Thi Le, and his brother, Dung Le, both of Pasco; and her parents, Luc Van Pham and Thom Thi Nguyen.
