Colorado Rallies Past Philadelphia

Vinny Castilla’s third hit of the night broke an eighth-inning tie as Colorado rallied past Philadelphia 8-5 in Denver.

Castilla, who ended his 0-for-12 slump with a two-run double in the third inning, broke a 5-5 tie with an RBI single. Colorado got two more runs on a fielder’s choice by Walt Weiss and a pinch-hit RBI single by Jason Bates off Ricky Bottalico (3-2).

Rockies relievers Lance Painter, Curtis Leskanic, Mike Munoz (2-2) and Darren Holmes allowed just one hit the final four innings.

Mets 7, Cubs 2

Chicago

Prized pitching prospect Jason Isringhausen shut down the Cubs for seven innings in his major league debut, and New York scored five runs in the ninth to beat Chicago.

Pinch-hitter Bill Spiers singled home the tie-breaking run in the ninth inning.

Isringhausen, 21, limited the Cubs to two runs and two hits, striking out six and walking two.

Cardinals 8, Expos 5

Montreal

Moises Alou flied out to the warning track with the bases loaded to end the game as St. Louis held off Montreal.

Ray Lankford’s three-run homer capped a five-run comeback in the eighth that put the Cardinals ahead.

The Expos tried to rally in the ninth against Tom Henke. Alou’s bid for a game-winning grand slam was caught on the track by right fielder Brian Jordan.

Padres 8, Reds 6

San Diego

Tony Gwynn lined into a triple play, but San Diego used Ray Holbert’s grand slam to beat Cincinnati.

Barry Larkin’s two-run homer helped the Reds build a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Holbert hit his first career slam during a five-run fifth inning that made it 8-6.

Gwynn went 2 for 4 and extended his hitting streak to 15 games, tying his longest streak since 1991.

Astros 3, Dodgers 1

Los Angeles

Mike Hampton won his fourth consecutive start, combining with Todd Jones on a six-hitter, as Houston beat Los Angeles.

Jeff Bagwell put the Astros ahead 2-1 with a broken-bat RBI single in the seventh inning. The Astros won at Dodger Stadium for the first time since 1993 after losing all six games there last season.

Marlins 10, Giants 8

San Francisco

Kurt Abbott’s grand slam capped an eight-run eighth inning and Jeff Conine had four hits and four RBIs, leading Florida past San Francisco.

The Marlins recovered from a 6-0 deficit in a game that featured 22 walks, 12 by San Francisco pitchers. Florida’s Quilvio Veras walked four times.

Clearing the bases

Infielder Tom Foley was designated for assignment by Montreal as the team made room on its 40-man roster for infielder Dave Silvestri. Foley can be claimed within the next 10 days by any major league team… . When Pittsburgh took two of three from the Giants on June 19-21, it started the Pirates on an upswing. They have won 10 of their last 14 at home and 15 of 23 overall… . St. Louis designated catcher Scott Hemond for assignment and activated outfielder Bernard Gilkey, who was sidelined with a strained right elbow.
