Page Receives Flames Job

Compiled From Wire Services

Pierre Page, the former coach of the Minnesota North Stars and Quebec Nordiques, was hired as coach of the Calgary Flames of he NHL.

He signed a multiyear contract and becomes and Flames’ fifth coach in five seasons. He inherits a club that failed to get past the first round of the playoffs for the sixth straight year.

“Pierre is an excellent communicator,” general manager Doug Risebrough said. “He will work at developing relationships with the players and getting them to understand what it takes to be successful.”

The Jets may have hit another snag in their attempt to stay in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

A judge approved a request that could stall construction of a new arena for the money-losing NHL team.

A summons against the city of Winnipeg and a building contractor alleges arena construction is proceeding without an environmental license. It is the latest of several developments threatening efforts to keep the franchise in Winnipeg.

The Buffalo Sabres have called a news conference for this morning, presumably to announce that Hartford Whalers assistant Ted Nolan will be named head coach.
