From Staff And Wire Reports

The Washington Public Power Supply System will lay off a total of 240 workers by the end of the year from the state’s only operating commercial nuclear power plant, a spokeswoman said Monday.

WPPSS delivered a total of 208 pink slips to workers at the plant and support facilities Friday and Monday. Layoff totals had not previously been released.

The last work day for those laid off this month will be July 28, and the remaining 32 workers will be laid off from August through December, WPPSS spokeswoman Mary Ace said.

The plant and its support activities employ some 1,600 people.
