What Does Your Pretzel Say About You?

Rick Bonino Food Editor

Forget ink blots, word associations and all that psychological mumbo jumbo. You can tell what makes somebody tick by the shape of their pretzel.

Keebler offers these personality profiles, based on a survey of pretzel preferences:

Twists: “Energetic, outdoorsy and social.”

Sticks: “Laid back, yet confident, and prefer to be by themselves.” Rods: “Laid back and outdoorsy … a party is not their idea of a good time; instead they would prefer to go camping or hiking with some good friends.”

Bavarian: “Indoorsy and laid back, yet social … may be romantics.”

Rings: “Health-conscious, upbeat, happy people who are concerned with their appearance.”

Nuggets: “Love being indoors, are laid back and enjoy socializing … like to engage others in lengthy conversations.”

The survey also showed men prefer rings, while women are more likely to choose sticks. (Guess you don’t have to be Freud to figure that one out.)

July is National Ice Cream Month, the perfect time to start preparing your entries for a couple of contests sponsored by Dreyer’s.

The Fantasy Flavor contest asks people to dream up their ideal ice cream (pretzel parfait, perhaps?). Deadline is Sept. 1. Fifteen finalists will receive a year’s supply of ice cream and get to mix their flavor in Dreyer’s test lab; if the company actually makes one, there’s a $1,000 bonus.

The Sweet Memories contest seeks stories about special ice cream moments in six categories: Most Romantic, Most Nostalgic, Most Humorous, Most Sentimental, Most Patriotic and Most Embarrassing. Deadline is Oct. 6; grand prize is a lifetime supply of ice cream.

Send entries (postcards only for Fantasy Flavors, with name, age, address and phone) to: Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, 5929 College Ave., Oakland, CA 94618.

And if you think there’s no chance of inventing the next new ice cream craze - or you think we were kidding about the pretzels - consider Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby.

Two pals in Pennsylvania played a practical joke on a co-worker by adding chocolate-covered pretzels, peanut butter and brownies to a pint of regular Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and insisting it was a new flavor.

Now it is. As modified by Ben & Jerry’s, Chubby Hubby features vanilla malt ice cream with chocolate-covered pretzels, peanut butter and fudge.
