American Legion Teams On Deck For Playoff Action
North Side American Legion baseball league leaders have all but assured themselves of post-season playoff berths.
Chapter 11/Longhorn Barbecue (Shadle Park) and M&L Construction (Mead) have compiled the league’s best records and lead the North Division by six games over third-place Olympic Sports.
The top three finishers in the league’s two divisions will play for the league’s state berth.
Last week Chapter 11 earned a tie for first place in the division by winning five straight games, including 8-3 in its showdown over M&L, for a 16-2 record.
The busy M&L team played seven times, winning five to end the week at 17-3.
Another North Side entrant, Scott’s Custom Homes, won four of six games and has evened its record at 8-8 to move into playoff contention.
During last week’s competition, Chapter 11 had a pair of three-run innings to lead M&L 7-2 after three innings. Chris Wilson pitched the win, Garrett Wideman and Jeff Lafferty drove in three runs apiece, the latter hitting two doubles.
The team also swept North Stars in a doubleheader, shut out Scott’s Custom Homes on Eric Hayden’s one-hitter, and outscored the Pullman Patriots.
Brett Corigliano had nine hits during the five games and Wilson had eight, and each batted a three-hit game.
M&L’s other loss was to Maxwell House (North Central), but during the week the Mead entrant topped Key Bank, Pullman, Spokane Federal Credit Union, Olympic Sports and Maxwell House.
Marcus Muzatko and Sam Chimienti each hit safely in five games, finishing the week with eight apiece.
Scott’s beat the Hillyard Boosters, Job Quest, and Olympic Sports and split with the K.C. Stars.
Jeremy Gilrein had eight hits and Mike Thomas seven to help spark the team.
Legion play is to conclude next Wednesday and be followed by the district tournament.
Golf tourney deadline nears
The fourth annual Seniors Golf Tournament at Liberty Lake Golf Course is set for July 27-28.
The tournament is open to all players age 50 and older, and the format is two-person best ball based upon a 7-handicap differential the first day and two-person scramble the next.
The entry fee is $40 per person, with 90 percent of the fees used for prizes.
The tournament benefits Spokane Valley Meals on Wheels.
The signup deadline is July 24.
