Bishop Meeting With Krishnas

Associated Press

Roman Catholic Archbishop J. Francis Stafford is trying to mend fences with the Hare Krishnas.

Stafford has been meeting with Denver-area Krishnas since he made a negative reference to the group in an April 29 speech. He has not apologized for the remark, but his meetings with Krishna members have been cordial.

In a speech in Fayetteville, N.C., Stafford said the “new face of American pluralism” has led to “covens of white witches and UFO groupies and spiritual counterfeits like EST and Hare Krishnas.”

Since making those comments, Stafford has visited the Krishna temple and plans to accept an invitation to return.
