Cheney’s Pence Falls In Semifinals

Ohio State junior Chris Wollman defeated Cheney native and Brigham Young senior Todd Pence 3 and 2 in Friday’s semifinals of the 70th U.S. Amateur Public Links Golf Championship in overcast Stow, Mass.

Wollmann, who also beat Darron Stiles of Florida, meets Bill Camping of Phoenix in today’s 36-hole final on the 6,807-yard, par-71 layout at Stow Acres Country Club.

Today’s winner qualifies for next year’s Masters. The semifinalists received automatic bids into this year’s U.S. Amateur in Newport, R.I.

Pence came from behind to win 1-up in his first match Friday, over Dean Overturf. Pence lost the first two holes, but rallied on Nos. 8 and 9.

The Cheney High graduate birdied from 10 feet on the 192-yard, par-3 ninth, then pulled even when Overturf bogeyed No. 10. Pence went 1-up by sinking a 15-footer for birdie-3 on No. 11, then stretched his lead to two holes with another birdie on the 185-yard 13th.

Pence squandered a two-hole lead in his afternoon loss to Wollmann when he bogeyed No. 6 and lost No. 7. Wollmann took command when Pence bogeyed Nos. 10-12.

Andy Hastings of Spokane closed with a 69, his best score in four rounds, to finish at 287 and tie for sixth at the 28th annual Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego.

The boys, ages 15-17, played the par-72 Torrey Pines South Course.

Legion baseball

Andy Potter struck out 16 batters without a walk, throwing a completegame one-hitter that carried Washington Trust Bank to a 6-0 victory over Key Bank at Gonzaga.

At Rogers, Scott’s Custom Homes scored four runs in the sixth - on a two-run single from Brad Coe and a two-run double from Jarett Robins - to beat Key Bank 8-5.

Scott’s clipped Washington Trust Bank 5-4 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth - all on Mark Miller’s double.

D.J. Funk and John Barneson each went 2 for 3 with two RBIs as M&L Construction beat Chapter 11/Longhorn BBQ 13-5 at Shadle Park.
