Obituaries

Frank Wallace Spokane

No service will be held for Frank E. Wallace, 70. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wallace, who was born in Butte, Mont., died Tuesday.

He served as an officer in the Army during World War II and later worked in the shipping business in Spokane.

He had lived in Spokane for 48 years and retired in 1990.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 51.

Survivors include one son, Ronald Wallace of Spokane; two brothers, Marion Carlson and Bill Wallace, both of Missoula; and one sister, Mary Gross of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Hazel Jones Spokane

Memorial service for Hazel E. Jones, 80, is set for 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Born in Drummond, Mont., Mrs. Jones died Thursday.

She moved to Spokane as an infant. She worked as a housekeeper for Deaconess Medical Center and retired in the 1970s.

She was a member of the Sons of Norway and the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include two daughters, Martha Davis of Spokane and Virginia Riddle of Cocolalla, Idaho; one son, Wayne Schwoob of Missoula; one brother, Martin Nelson of Spokane; 26 grandchildren and 50 greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Elwood ‘Bud’ Hayen Spokane

Memorial service for Elwood F. “Bud” Hayen, 86, is planned for 10 a.m. today at First Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hayen, who died Monday, was born in Enid, Okla.

He was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma.

A 42-year Spokane resident, Mr. Hayen worked for Continental Baking for 45 years and retired in 1974 as plant manager.

He was a member of the Spokane Central Lions Club and Westerners International and was active in the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Hayen; three sons, Philip Hayen of Concord, Mass., Donald Hayen of Long Beach, Calif., and David Hayen of Culver City, Calif.; two sisters, Grace Uker and Pauline Stockton, both of San Anselmo, Calif.; and three granddaughters.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church.

Emil Benatz Colbert

Memorial service for Emil L. Benatz, 88, will be at 1 p.m. today at Colbert Chapel. Private burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Benatz died July 16.

He was born in Yugoslavia and was raised in Clarkdale, Ariz.

He moved to California when he was 21 and worked for McDonnell-Douglas for 38 years. He retired in 1962 and moved to Colbert in 1976.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Benatz; one son, George Benatz of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Janet Callaghan of La Habra, Calif., and Sharon Litzinger of Spokane; one brother, George Benatz of Clarkdale; one sister, Julia Nash of San Bernardino, Calif.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Orval Douglas Spokane

Service for Orval S. Douglas, 79, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at First Assembly of God. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Douglas, a longtime Spokane resident, died Thursday. He was born in Chewelah, Wash.

He owned Opportunity Sweeping and Striping for the past 15 years and had previously worked as a dental lab technician for 25 years.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was a member of First Assembly of God.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Esther Douglas; one son, Kirk Douglas of Spokane; one brother, Vane Douglas of Spokane; and two granddaughters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Assembly of God Missions Fund.

Richard ‘Joe’ Schamp Deer Park

Graveside service for Richard “Joe” Schamp, 17, is planned for 1 p.m. today at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Portland, Richard died Saturday in an auto accident southwest of Deer Park.

He attended Deer Park High School and Deer Park alternative school and would have been a senior this fall.

Survivors include his father and an uncle.

April Lee Spokane

Private memorial service for April A. Lee, 34, will be held by the family. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Miss Lee died Monday as a result of a heart condition.

She is survived by her mother, Vera Lee of Spokane; two brothers, Gary and Jerry Lee, both of Spokane; and two sisters, Christine O’Connor of Spokane and Donna Rose of West Virginia.

Howard Fifield Grand Coulee

Memorial service for Howard Wayne Fifield, 79, was held Friday at Strate Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Coulee.

Mr. Fifield, a retired Cheney police officer, died Wednesday.

He was born in Washtucna, Wash., and was reared in Ritzville. He moved to Cheney, where he was a police officer for 29 years. He retired in 1975 and moved to the Grand Coulee area in 1976.

His wife, Maxine, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his companion, Karen Tiegs; two daughters, Marge Tiegs of Fairfield, Calif., and Sherry Breeden of Spokane; and one grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wright Elementary School in Grand Coulee.

Joseph Tomsha Chewelah, Wash.

Service for Joseph Tomsha, 87, will be at 10 a.m Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jump Off Joe, Wash. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Jump Off Joe. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tomsha, who died Tuesday, was born in Valley, Wash.

He lived most of his life at Waitts Lake, Wash., and farmed and worked in the timber industry.

He served in the Army during World War II and received the Bronze Star.

His wife, Ruth, preceded him in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Kris Tomsha; three sisters, Agnes Williams of Mountlake Terrace, Wash., Bette Gradishar of Savannah, Ga., and Ann Herman of Gresham, Ore.; and four brothers, Louis Tomsha of Atwater Calif., Stanley Tomsha of Medical Lake, Matt Tomsha of Salem, Ohio, and Jake Tomsha of Colville, Wash.

John Cappellano Sr. Spokane

Vigil service for John J. Cappellano Sr., 63, is planned for 7 p.m. Sunday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Cappellano, who died Wednesday, was born in Philadelphia. He was a clerk for the Postal Service for 25 years and retired in 1988.

He had lived in Spokane for 38 years and was a member of St. Aloysius Parish. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Cappellano; four sons, John, Michael and Stephen Cappellano, all of Spokane, and Mark Cappellano of Los Angeles; two daughters, Theresa Burke of Austin, Texas, and Rebecca Jones of Spokane; two brothers, Nazarine Cappellano of Spokane and Vincent Cappellano of Philadelphia; two sisters, Sylvia Kennedy of Philadelphia and Eda Venti of New Jersey; and five grandchildren.

Rusha McClain Spokane

Memorial service for Rusha M. McClain, 63, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeSouth is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. McClain, who died Monday, was born in Georgia.

She was the retail manager for the Fairchild Air Force Base Exchange for more than 20 years.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Ernest McClain; three daughters, Teresa McClain of Detroit, Patricia McClain Osborne of Spokane and Mechelle McClain of Seattle; her mother, Mary Marshall of Detroit; two brothers, William Marshall of Philadelphia and Roosevelt Marshall of New Jersey; one sister, Ora Marshal of Philadelphia; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel A.M.E. Missionary Society.

John Shears Spokane

Memorial service for John R. Shears, 89, is set for 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel of the Cremation Society of Washington.

Mr. Shears, who was born in Okanogan, Wash., died Tuesday.

A 50-year Spokane resident, he was employed as a carpenter and roofer for 40 years and retired more than 30 years ago.

He is survived by two sons, Christopher Shears of Cheney and Richard Shears of Spokane; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Nadine Langford Spokane

No service will be held for Nadine G. Langford, at her request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Langford, 76, died Wednesday.

She was born in Morrisonville, Ill., and had moved to Spokane from Hayden Lake, Idaho, seven years ago.

She was a homemaker, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include one son, Kurt Langford of Arizona; one daughter, Candy Lindquist of Nine Mile Falls; and five grandchildren.
