Hitchhiker Stabs Driver, Takes Car

From Staff And Wire Reports

A 28-year-old man was arrested by sheriff’s deputies Friday night after a motorist reported being stabbed by a hitchhiker in Chattaroy, north of Spokane.

Scott Hoagland is being held in the County Jail on a charge of first-degree robbery, said sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Dave Wiyrick.

Hoagland was arrested after deputies stopped a red Cadillac stolen from a 54-year-old man. He told deputies he was stabbed after picking up a man and a woman who were hitchhiking.

The victim ran from his car after suffering a minor stab wound, and the attacker drove away with the vehicle, Wiyrick said.

The female hitchhiker was not in the car when it was spotted by deputies at U.S. Highway 395 and Hastings Road, about 30 minutes after the assault, Wiyrick said.
