Options In Homeschooling Presented At Public Library

Lynn Gibson Correspondent

“Beneficial,” “rewarding,” “thoroughly enjoyable” … Those comments are from families who homeschool their children.

“The ABC’s of Homeschooling,” sponsored by the Spokane Public Library, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hillyard branch library, 4005 N. Cook. Anyone interested in this alternative method of education is invited to attend.

Kathleen McCurdy, executive director of the Family Learning Organization, will present different approaches to homeschooling and how to get started, as well as provide area resources for homeschoolers.

Pre-registration is requested; call 626-5380.

Create a storyboard: Day-care providers, parents and teachers are invited to attend a Flannel Board Story Workshop, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, at the East Side library, 500 S. Stone.

Sponsored by the Spokane Public Library’s Project Right Start, the free workshop will provide instruction and materials to make your own flannel board. Participants, however, are asked to bring a sharp pair of scissors.

Today is the last day for pre-registration; call Cecilia McGowan at 626-5314.

Toy recall: The Fischer-Price Baseball Training Center (Model No. 2875) has been targeted for repair by the manufacturer in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The battery gasses were not properly vented, so if the toy’s motor stalls with the switch on, the batteries can overheat and explode, a spokeswoman said.

Consumers should contact Fisher-Price at (800) 355-8882 for a full refund or a free metal clip that is easily installed in the battery compartment to prevent overheating.

Mom to mom: A new monthly newsletter, The Mom’s Connection, provides a forum for mothers and grandmothers to share experiences of parenting.

Written in a personal, anecdotal style, tips and topics are short and easy to read for women with only a minute to spare.

For a subscription (six issues per year), send a $7.50 check or money order to: The Mom’s Connection, P.O. Box 62084, Colorado Springs, CO 80962. Request a sample copy at the same address by enclosing a loose 32-cent stamp.

World walk: Breast-feeding families, their supporters and health-care providers around the globe will march Aug. 5 in the fifthannual La Leche League International “World Walk for Breast-feeding.”

Locally, the walk begins at 10 a.m. at the Riverfront Park’s Clock Tower and ends with a group picnic.

La Leche League International is a nonprofit organization that provides support to breast-feeding mothers in 60 countries. For more information, call Jennifer Chapman at 924-0008.

Celebrate reading: The Spokane Public Library continues its storytime sessions through Aug. 10. Contact your neighborhood branch for specific program offerings.

The “End of Summer Reading Celebration” is Aug. 11, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Riverfront Park’s Clock Tower Meadow.

In keeping with the library’s summer theme, “Incredible Reading Machines,” interactive machine exhibits will include the Pacific Science Center’s van, “Physics on Wheels,” and a hydropower exhibit from Washington Water Power.

All ages are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and join the fun. For more information, call 626-5331.
