Giants Prevail In Sanders’ Debut

Associated Press

National League

Deion Sanders was upstaged by a rookie teammate Monday night when both made their debut for the San Francisco Giants.

Jamie Brewington pitched seven strong innings in his first major-league game, earning the victory as San Francisco beat Florida 8-3 in Miami.

Sanders, acquired from Cincinnati in a trade Friday, joined the team 2-1/2 hours before the game, batted leadoff and went 1 for 6 as the Giants won for just the fourth time in their past 15 games.

“Maybe I’m a rabbit’s foot,” he said. “When I go to another city, great things happen.”

Padres 10, Reds 8

Cincinnati

San Diego rocked Mark Portugal for nine runs in his Cincinnati debut and the Padres went on to snap the Reds’ five-game winning streak.

Portugal (5-6), wearing Deion Sanders’ old No. 21, got jeered by the home crowd as he gave up 11 hits and nine runs - seven earned - in just 3-1/3 innings.

Dodgers 6, Astros 5

Houston

Chad Fonville drove in three runs as Los Angeles held on to beat Houston.

Ramon Martinez pitched his second complete game despite allowing a three-run homer to Derrick May in the ninth.

Braves 3, Pirates 2

Pittsburgh

Ryan Klesko’s home run to straightaway center field broke a ninth-inning tie and carried Atlanta to its 17th victory in 21 games.

Klesko’s drive, his 11th homer in his last 38 games, was only the second off Pittsburgh’s Dan Plesac (3-2) this season.

Rockies 11, Phillies 3

Philadelphia

Rookie Bryan Rekar overcame a pinch-hit home run by pitcher Omar Olivares and threw Colorado’s first complete game of the season, leading the Rockies past Philadelphia.

Olivares, batting for pitcher Tyler Green, became the first pitcher to connect for a pinch-hit homer since Don Robinson for Pittsburgh on June 19, 1990, against San Diego.

Cubs 5, Mets 3

Chicago

Mark Grace’s two-run double highlighted a four-run fifth inning as Chicago snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Jim Bullinger (7-2) pitched seven innings, giving up two runs and seven hits to New York.
