Lee, Silvernail Capture Gold In Oly Festival Volleyball

The North women’s volleyball team, which included Ferris graduate Jaimie Lee, won a see-saw battle over the South team, taking the Olympic Festival gold medal in Boulder, Colo.

Only the fifth and deciding game was particularly close in the match, with the women’s finale being decided by a 15-7, 2-15, 15-2, 1-15, 15-11 margin.

It was the second gold medal for Lee, who will be a sophomore at Notre Dame. Lee played for the East last year. Sarah Silvernail of Tacoma, who plays at Washington State, also played for the North.

Former Gonzaga University setter Tracy McKinney was a member of the South squad and won her second straight silver medal, participating for the West last summer.

Basketball

The Seafirst Select team made 12 of 13 free throws in the last 2 minutes to pull away for a 77-59 victory over Los Angeles in the Las Vegas Prep National Tournament Grand Finale.

The area team also made 11 of 21 3-pointers, including four each by David Schillinger of West Valley and Neal Robertson of Richland. Schillinger finished with 21 points and Robertson had 12.

The 2-0 Searfirst Select team plays Southern Oregon in the 60-team tournament today.

Jason Weatherred, who will be a junior at Ferris, scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Northwest to a 62-48 win over the Detroit Orangemen in their first pool game at the U-18 BCI Tournament in Arizona.

The team, with six Ferris players, maintained a 10-point lead throughout the game.

The Chewelah Stars also won their first game as Jeremy Landram of Chewelah made 6 of 7 free throws in the last 2 minutes of a 56-51 win over Dallas. Landram finished with 21 points.

The GSL team in the tournament dropped a 78-75 decision to New York Riverside.

The Seafirst Select Hoofpest AllStars were hurt by making just 23 of 41 free throws after they rallied from a 48-33 halftime deficit.

Mike Homer of Lewis and Clark and Damian Long of Mead had 15 points apiece for the Spokane team.

Georgia, the fifth-seeded team in the nation, missed a shot at the buzzer as the Spokane Stars held on for a 75-74 victory in the U-15 AAU Girls Nationals in Indianapolis.

Earlier in the day, Spokane lost to Shreveport, La., 59-56.

Crystal Lee made two free throws with 18 seconds left to give Spokane its win over Georgia. Lee, from Central Valley, and Jennifer Williams of Gonzaga Prep both scored 14 points with Ricki Jackson of CV and Kelly Benad of Mead adding 12.

Legion baseball

One day after clinching the Northern Division championship, M&L Construction (22-3) edged Olympic Sports 3-2 in ART American Legion baseball action at Gonzaga University.

M&L scored all its runs in the bottom of the fifth to offset a two-run first by Olympic Sports. Matt Armitage threw out the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning.

Matt Clouse doubled in two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Key Bank a 7-6 win over Merchants at Central Valley.

At Shadle Park, the MaxWell House used an eight-run third to defeat Scott’s Custom 12-8. Jayson Lake went 4-for-4 and Jeremy Johnson 4-for-5 with two doubles. Sam Hess was 3-for-3 with a double, homer and three RBIs for Scott’s.

In the second game, Spokane Federal Credit Union edged Global Federal Credit Union 5-1, taking advantage of seven errors.

Softball

The girls 16 and under Class B fastpitch regional tournament begins Friday at noon at Franklin Park with 32 teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska competing.

The tournament runs through Sunday. Four teams qualify for the area tournament Aug. 12-13 in Auroa, Colo.

F&F Foundations and Pabco Roofing represent Spokane in the tournament. Both play in the Valley Girls Softball Association.

Golf

Britney Holt, who will be a junior at Mead, shot an 8-over-par 79 in the first round of the AJGA McDonald’s Betsy Rawls Girls National Championship at Wilmington, Del.

Molly Cooper, the State AAA champion from Tumwater, Wash., is two strokes behind the leaders.

Suzi Stone of Spokane lost to Lee Fesler 3 and 2 in the first round of match play at the Washington State Women’s Golf Association Championship at Redmond.

Carol Holland, the medalist in stroke play, lost her first-round match to Gayle Colello 2-up.

Andrew Hastings of Spokane shot a 74 and is four shots back after the first round of the 48th U.S. Amateur Championship in Fargo, N.D.

The low 64 after today’s second round of stroke play advance to match play. The championship match is scheduled Saturday.

Tyler Williamson of Sacramento, Calif., and Bret Rupert of Boise shared the first-round lead after 2-under-par 70s in the 29th Pacific Coast Amateur in Gig Harbor.

The field of 87 will be cut to the low 48 and ties and anyone else within 10 shots of the lead after the second round of the 72-hole tournament today.

Bob Christensen of Hayden Lake is two back at 70.

Track and field

Washington State University men’s and women’s track and field and cross country coach Rick Sloan said former Lewis and Clark athlete Lissa Olson has been promoted to associate coach for the Cougars track program.

Olson’s duties include working with the men and women high, long and triple jumpers now that the programs have been combined. She will also assist with the sprints, hurdles and recruiting.
