Kanyon Just Grand For Gfcu

Kanyon Anderson’s grand slam was one of three sixth-inning home runs for Global Federal Credit Union, which scored 12 times in the inning to beat Key Bank 13-5 in American Legion baseball Wednesday night at Central Valley.

Jason Smith led off the sixth with a solo homer, and Jon Stevenson added a three-run shot.

GFCU secured second place in the South Division with a 17-8 record. The Legion Tournament begins tonight at Shadle Park.

At Pullman, Spokane Athletic Supply swept the Patriots 8-0 and 7-4 to secure the No. 3 seed. Erick Eigenhuis went the distance for SAS in the opener, walking just two. Teammate Rick Chance went 3 for 4 and R.J. Delmese added two RBIs.

Delmese pitched a complete game in the nightcap, striking out eight with five walks. Pullman’s Ray Kallaher went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

At Shadle Park, Corey Smiley went 4 for 5 and provided the gamewinning, two-run double in the eighth inning as the Hillyard Boosters defeated Chapter 11/Longhorn 13-11.

Girls basketball

Rikki Jackson scored 19 points for Spokane, but the Stars squandered a 16-point lead in the second half to lose 54-51 to Tennessee at the AAU U-15 Nationals at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis.

The Stars, outscored 24-5 in the final 8 minutes, finished 17th out of 71 teams. Crystal Lee of Central Valley added 10 points.

Boys basketball

Scott Stocum of Ferris scored 13 points and Paul Sweeney (Gonzaga Prep) and Erik Carlson (University) each had 12 as Seafirst Select Hoopfest defeated Denver Metro 81-46 at the BCI Tournament in Las Vegas.

Damian Long of Mead added 10 points for Hoopfest, which improved to 1-1 in pool play. Hoopfest plays Menlo Park of San Francisco today.

Also at the BCI Tournament, Chewelah had five players score in double figures in a 67-64 victory over Team Arkansas.

Chris Boone of Chewelah High School scored 13 points, with Chris Boone (Chewelah) and Kasey Ahrens (Riverside) added 12.

Chewelah jumped to a 23-11 lead in the first quarter. Matt Shiflet of Brewster led Chewelah with nine rebounds and Boone added seven.

Chewelah is 3-0 in pool play, making the championship bracket, where it plays tonight against South Coast of California.

In another BCI game, Jason Weatherred and Chris Hardan of Ferris joined Ritzville’s John Gilbreath with 16 points apiece as Northwest ripped Montana, 83-53.

Weatherred and Hardan each grabbed eight rebounds for Northwest, which plays Houston Hoops tonight.

Scott Hoover of Lake City added seven points.

At the Las Vegas Prep National Grand Finale, Seafirst Select defeated Oregon 97-70, getting 24 points - all on 3-pointers - from Neal Robertson of Richland and 16 from West Valley star David Schillinger.

Tim Wang of Pullman added 12 points for Seafirst, which plays Oklahoma today in the championship bracket.

Golf

Kelli Kamimura of Burlington had an eight-shot lead in girls’ play while Ryan Earl of Olympia held a two-stroke lead in the boys’ division after the first round of the Washington State Junior golf tournament in Tacoma.

Kamimura, the state Class AA high school girls’ champion, shot a par-72 on the 5,220-yard Oakbrook Golf and Country Club course. Taya Battistella of Richland followed with an 80.

Spokane’s Jenni Hatley and Hillary Prugh shot 82 and 83, respectively. Jacqueline Huff of Lewiston shot 85.

Earl carded par 71 on the 6,400-yard Fircrest Golf Club course. Travis Caffrey of Sedro Woolley followed with a 73.

Sprague Kolp of Woodinville was the boys’ 12-14 leader with his 3-over 74 at Oakbrook, followed by John Cassidy of Yelm and Reid Hatley and Jeremy Kuhlman, both of Spokane.

The 15-17 boys will play Oakbrook in the second round today and the 15-17 girls and both 12-14 divisions will play Fircrest.

Coach, educator dies

Buford “Jug” Beck, who coached Missoula’s Sentinel High School to 13 consecutive state wrestling titles, died Monday night after a series of strokes.

Beck, a wrestling pioneer in Montana, coached at Sentinel from 1956-91. During those years, he regularly accompanied teams to Spokane for dual meets.

Beck coached Gene Davis, a bronze medalist at the 1976 Olympics, in addition to the Owen brothers - including North Idaho College coach John, University coach Don and Ferris coach Tim.

Powerlifting

Brittany Fry, 18, will compete in the 105-pound powerlifting weight division at Saturday’s Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Medical Lake High graduate lifted 500 pounds, well over the 325-pound qualifying weight for the Junior Olympics.

Rue named UI assistant

Kate Rue, who spent the last year coaching and playing professionally in Denmark, has been named to fill the assistant-coaching vacancy on Julie Holt’s women’s basketball staff at the University of Idaho.

Rue replaces Chris Marek, who left Idaho to become the assistant video coordinator for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association.

Prior to going to Denmark, Rue spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Whitworth College.

Rue graduated from the University of Washington in 1986. She was a three-year basketball starter for the Huskies and helped lead the team to a 26-2 record and a spot in the NCAA Tournament in the 1984-85 season.
