Troops Will Leave Disputed Amazon Border

Associated Press

Peru and Ecuador said Wednesday they will demilitarize more than 200 square miles of disputed Amazon jungle where they fought a month-long border war this year.

The agreement, reached Tuesday, takes effect Aug. 1, but doesn’t settle the issue of where the border lies. The demilitarized area is divided nearly equally between the two countries.

The war began Jan. 26 after Ecuadorean forces attacked a Peruvian helicopter outpost. About 80 people were killed and 200 were wounded before a truce took effect March 1.
