Hanson Closes In

Beck Iverson shot a 9-under-par 63 to take the second-round lead in the LPGA Friendly’s Classic in Agawam, Mass.

Iverson, who broke her previous tour best by four strokes, had a 10-under 134 total for a one-stroke lead over Kris Tschetter shot a 68. Tracy Hanson and Jane Crafter were three back at 137. Hanson, from Rathrum, Idaho, had a 68. Clarkston resident Robin Walton had her second straight 73 and just made the cut.

Brian Barnes opened a three-stroke lead midway through the British Seniors Open in Portrush, Northern Ireland, by firing his second straight 67.

The 50-year-old Scot, who plays on the U.S. Seniors Tour, leads Bob Murphy by three. The American followed his first round 68 with a 69.

Fred Funk broke open a close tournament, shooting an 8-under-par 63 before half the field had teed off, and led Jim McGovern by three strokes after the second round of the Ideon Classic in Sutton, Mass.

Tied at 134 were Billy Ray Brown, Brian Claar, Gene Sauers, Dan Forsman, Woody Austin, Steve Lowery, Howard Twitty, Billy Andrade and Dan Pooley. Black shot 70 and was at 135.

Bob Dickson, who didn’t play competitive golf for 16 years, shot a 66 to join Hale Irwin and Jim Colbert atop the leaderboard after the first round of the $850,000 Ameritech Senior Open in Aurora, Ill.

Scotland’s Sam Torrance shot a 7-under-par 64 to take a two-stroke lead over Ireland’s Philip Walton after two rounds of the $1.04 million Dutch Open in Hilversu, Netherlands.

John Daly, the British Open champion, shot himself back into contention with a 66 that left him at 4-under 138, six shots off the lead. Scott Hoch of the United States, who shared the first-round lead at 65, had a 70 and was three shots back.
