O’Brien Last Twice

Decathlete Dan O’Brien, competing in four events during the weekend, finished last in the pole vault and discus as track begin at the U.S. Olympic Festival.

O’Brien cleared 16 feet, 4-3/4 inches on his first try in the pole vault, then failed to make 17-3/4. He threw the discus 164 feet, 1 inch.

In the women’s 1,500 meter run, Rogers graduate Sarah Schwald, running for the West, finished second in 4 minutes, 28.55 seconds, just behind the 4:28.33 of Elva Martinez-Dryer of Durango, Colo.

Mike Conley, in fifth place going into his final attempt, won the triple jump with a leap of 55-3/4.

The West women’s basketball team advanced to the championship game against the East after beating the North 56-40.
