Scope East Sponsors Inaugural Security Fair

Increased awareness will be the theme for what SCOPE East officials hope will become an annual event.

SCOPE East will sponsor its first Community Safety and Security Fair on Sunday. The event will run from noon to 6 p.m. at the bus barn and library grounds, located on the 22000 block of East Wellesley in Otis Orchards.

The fair is an attempt “to help people realize there are ways they can participate in helping make community safe,” said SCOPE East secretary Nancy Cowles.

Organizations such as the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department, Valley Fire and the Foresters will staff booths at the fair.

Included in the Sheriff’s Department presentation will be a demonstration by one of its K-9 units. Deputies will also be giving out bicycle helmets to children who do not have them, Cowles said.

Organizers are planning a variety of other activities, including a bicycle rodeo and registration. The Foresters will also be fingerprinting and photographing children for identification.

“Its our first annual so we are kind of flying by the seat of our pants,” Cowles said.

Videos on safety will also be shown by the fire department.

“The whole idea of SCOPE is that it’s not just up to the sheriffs to make community safe, its our responsibility also,” Cowles said. The fair, which will be run by about 50 volunteers, is free.

“It will be kind of like a fair with different booths where people can come and visit,” Cowles said. “Hopefully it’s a fun day, but it also raises awareness of how to make our community safer.”
