Three Families May Need To Make More Room In The Trophy Case

Dave Trimmer And Kevin Blocker S Staff writer

Three familes have a chance to have two champions when the Spokane Valley Youth Baseball season comes to an end today.

The championships of the Pee Wee (9- and 10-year-olds), Midget (11-12) and Pony (13-14) divisions will be determined in a tripleheader at West Valley High School.

The youngest players go first with the Spokane Indians (McDonald Elementary) playing James Psomas DDS (University) at 9 a.m.

At noon, it’s undefeated Resort by the Tracks (Orchard Center) against Happy Hatter (St. Mary’s) for the Midgets.

The Pony finale, at 3 p.m., matches unbeaten West Valley against Carsten’s Marine (Evergreen).

Jeremy (Happy Hatter) and Josh (Carsten’s) Nichols could both win titles for teams coached by their father, Tom. Standing in the way, however, are Wes Thew and Ian Harty, who play for the West Valley Pony team and Brian Thew and Derek Harty, who play for Resort by the Tracks.

Tony Wacenske struck out 10 and allowed three hits in West Valley’s 6-1 win over Bowdish in the Pony semifinals. Adam Griffith, Matt Hietala and Jerry Jamison had two hits each.

Josh Nichols, John Blakesley, Cody Owen and Aaron Anzalone hit consecutive singles as Carsten’s pulled away for an 8-1 win over Mountain View II. Blakesley and Owen combined for 10 strikeouts.

In Thursday’s Midget semifinals, grand slams were the difference. Kenny Florence knocked one in Happy Hatter’s 15-7 victory over Broadway Eye Care (University) and Joe Covey had one as Resort by the Tracks defeated Norma’s Burger Barn (Otis Orchards) 20-5.

Willie Horlen looped a single just past the first baseman to drive in two runs to break a 5-5 tie in the fifth inning as James Psomas DDS defeated Valley Kiwanis (Chester) 8-5. Scott McFarland allowed one hit and struck out nine in the last three innings.

The Spokane Indians defeated Omec Construction 17-10 as Derek Harrison and Josh Nigh each went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Sam Brune and Bobby Williams each had three hits and Blake Trimmer and Chris Stiles two each.

The Indians turned a triple play after taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Omec loaded the bases when Indians second baseman Trimmer caught a line drive, threw to Ryan Moore to double the runner off first and Moore threw to catcher Chris Stiles, catching the runner trying to sneak home.
