Regional Next For Babe Ruth Baseball Champ

The Panhandle All-Stars, champions of the Idaho state Babe Ruth Tournament last weekend, next travel to Hamilton, Mont., for the northwest regional tournament.

Panhandle, made up of 14- and 15-year-olds from Sandpoint and Priest River, will play a southern Washington team in Saturday’s opener.

Panhandle marched through the state event at Sandpoint’s Memorial Field with a 4-0 record.

The club made four errors in four games and played error-free in downing Upper Valley of Rexburg, Idaho, 5-0 in the title game.

Panhandle features five left-handed starting pitchers, including Shaun Warren and Dustin Riechart, who won two games in the state tourney. Panhandle’s most memorable victory was a 5-4 decision over Lewiston in front of 1,000 spectators.

“We’re pretty balanced and we’ve got a great pitching staff,” said coach Rob Osborn, who lived up to a pre-tourney promise and let his players shave his head when Panhandle claimed first. Assistant coaches Dave Banks and Jeff Connolly and a few parents also are follicle-free.

Basketball

Jeremy Landram totaled 53 points as Chewelah won a pair of games at the Basketball Congress International tournament at Phoenix.

Landram scored 23 and Jordan Lasamos added 17 as Chewelah jumped to a 15-2 lead and stopped ArizonaSierra Vista 73-59. In a 65-57 win over Central Texas, Landram scored 30.

Chewelah (5-2) advanced to the final 16 in the consolation bracket.

Also at the tournament, Houston Gold eliminated the Northwest All-Stars 98-80. Chris Hardan and Leonard Harmon scored 19 apiece for Northwest (3-3). John Galbreath added 17 points and Harmon had seven rebounds.

Golf

Dick Bingham shot a 1-under-par 70 at Downriver Golf Course for the lead after two days of the Spokane City Amateur Championships.

Bingham, who shot 69 at Indian Canyon Golf Course on Friday, leads Craig Looper by one shot. Looper added a 71 to the 69 he shot Friday.

The tournament concludes today at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course.

Baseball

John Barneson drove in three runs as M&L Construction advanced to the American Legion championship series with an 11-9 win over Spokane Athletic Supply at Shadle Park’s Al K. Jackson Field.

Matt Armitage slugged a solo home run and scored twice for M&L, which swept the best-of-three series. Armitage and teammate D.J. Funk had three hits apiece.

Paul McLendon had three RBIs and Andrew Larson two for SAS.

M&L plays for the title against either Chapter 11/Longhorn Barbecue or Spokane Federal Credit Union. Chapter 11/Longhorn, which played late Saturday, leads the series 1-0. The best-of-three championship begins Friday at Jackson Field.
