Sam Miller Wins 1st Place In Patriotic Art Award

Sam Miller, a senior at Lake City High School, won first place for Idaho’s Patriotic Art Award for the second time. The annual contest is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post No. 889 in Post Falls; judging is done in Boise. Miller also received this award as a freshman; that year his picture placed third in the nation. This year’s picture will now be judged nationally.

The following Idaho and Montana residents were elected to Phi Beta Kappa’s national honor society this spring at Washington State University:

Genessee: Jennifer Zenner

Kamiah: Milo Hatch

Lewiston: Brenda Baker

Missoula: Kristin Johnson

Dave Ballard’s eighth-grade social studies class at Lakes Middle School in Coeur d’Alene made the grade in the Social Studies Olympiad by placing sixth in the nation.

The Olympiad has 50 multiple-choice questions covering history, geography and current events. The students and their correct scores out of 50 are:

Tom Shaver, 47; Gavin Jacobson, 46; Laura Dodge, 45; Josh Hocking, 45; Steve Johnson, 44; Erin Fender, 43; Eddie Joy, 43; Tyler Perry, 42; Hilary Frank, 42; and Billy Storlie, 42.

Thomas Osborn, leader of the Coeur d’Alene Elks Lodge No. 1254, recently attended the 131st National Convention of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in New Orleans. Osborn is now recognized as a voting member of the Elks.

Heather Louise Jennings, daughter of Marilyn Jennings of Coeur d’Alene, and Everett Jennings Sr. of Spokane, was named to the Dean’s List of Simmons College, Boston. Jennings is a senior, majoring in economics.

Brandon Goins, a fourth-grade student at Priest River Elementary, recently returned from the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. He was selected from 250 students as Trainee of the Week and was awarded a medal.

Leonard Grutza, Coeur d’Alene, recently graduated from the Inland Northwest Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Association in Spokane.
