Shumacher Tops Rival Hill

Compiled From Wire Services

One lap. That’s how long Damon Hill’s much-touted challenge lasted at the German Grand Prix, where history was made by Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher’s victory in a BenettonRenault not only was the first by a German in that nation’s only Formula One race, but it gave the defending series champion a commanding 21-point lead over his British rival after 10 of 17 events.

Both Schumacher and Hill were surprised by the spin and crash that ended the Briton’s effort after just one lap. Schumacher was able to cruise to his fifth victory of the year.
