Hoopfest Knows The Score: Largest Tourney Of Its Kind

Hoopfest is about to become the largest 3-on-3 street basketball tournament in the country, the event’s executive secretary said Tuesday.

More than 3,500 teams have registered for the June 24-25 event on the streets of downtown.

“We’re still processing entries,” Rick Steltenpohl said, “hoping to squeeze in all of those who mailed their registration before the deadline.”

The tournament is set up to accommodate a record 3,500 teams.

No late registration will be accepted, Steltenpohl said.

Space could become a tighter issue if construction at the Spokane Transit Authority facility between Riverside and Sprague avenues lags.

Hoopfest organizers plan to set up eight courts on Sprague that could be eliminated by work on the STA site, Steltenpohl said.

“It’s an issue we’re hoping to resolve,” he said. “STA is doing everything it can to ensure that concrete is poured in time.”

If Sprague is off-limits, games will be played on Riverside between Stevens and Howard streets.
