Military Posts Attacked By Gunmen

Compiled From Wire Services

Gunmen attacked military posts in Burundi’s capital of Bujumbura Wednesday, killing an army soldier, authorities said.

The attacks came as a team from the Organization of African Unity visited the city in an effort to stop violence between the majority Hutu and minority Tutsi ethnic groups.

OAU Secretary General Salim A. Salim warned Burundians on national radio Tuesday that the international community is fed up with the violence.

An estimated 100,000 people have died in ethnic violence since the slaying of the country’s first Hutu leader, President Melchior Ndadaye, in an attempted coup mounted by elements of the military in October of 1993.
