Roses really start coming to the fore in June and it won’t be many weeks before the fragrant blossoms overshadow other flowers in the garden.
Traditionally roses come in three forms: bushes, climbers and trees. Now the company Flower Carpet USA is introducing a ground cover rose. It blooms pink and grows into a plant about three feet tall and spreading three feet across. Flowers bloom in six- to eight-inch clusters with about 18 per cluster.
The best news: it’s hardy to Zone 2 and has been tested in Calgary.
The plants retail for about $16; they are available now bareroot from Van Bourgondien Brothers by calling (800) 622-9997. The potted roses will not be available in local garden centers until August.
Videotape yourself: If you have a video camera and you plan to paint your house you can enter the “This Old House”/Glidden Paint Company contest.
The winner and a guest will spend a weekend this fall at the “This Old House” site in Boston. The trip includes lunch with hosts Steve Thomas and Norm Abram and “This Old House” jackets and autographed books.
Send your videotaped entry that highlights the before, during and after steps of your painting project to The Glidden Company, PO Box 11172, Chicago, IL 60611 before Sept. 10. Limit the tape to 15 minutes. There are two categories: interior and exterior painting projects.
The winner and runners-up will be selected Oct. 1.
