Arkansas first lady Betty Tucker refused to testify Thursday when she appeared before the Whitewater grand jury as directed by a federal prosecutor’s subpoena.
Just hours before they were to appear, Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr withdrew subpoenas for Gov. Jim Guy Tucker and his lawyer. Another Tucker lawyer warned Starr last week that the governor would refuse to answer questions.
Betty Tucker also refused to share information with the panel.
“After 18 months of being harassed by the Whitewater prosecutor, both me personally, and my family, including my children, there is no way that I would talk with the prosecutors in a situation where neither my husband nor my attorney could be present, and they could not be present with me,” she said.
The governor accused Starr of using “intimidation and threats” to pressure his wife and other “ordinary folks in Arkansas” for information.
