Mudslide Hits Slum, Leaving 8 Dead

Compiled From Wire Services

Another in a weeklong series of mudslides in northeastern Brazil killed eight people, bringing the death toll to 42, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The Folha de Sao Paulo said 12 people were injured when mud poured into the Cajazeiras slum on the outskirts of Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, 1,000 miles northeast of Rio.

Rains in Salvador during the past week have caused more than 500 mudslides and the bursting of a dike.

Rescue workers found shacks and victims buried in mud.
