N.W. Gymnastics Academy 7th At State Championships

With three of its 11 entries receiving awards, Spokane’s Northwest Gymnastics Academy placed seventh among the 25 teams in the Level 6 portion of the USAG Level 5 and 6 State Championships in Issaquaw, Wash.

Phuong To led the NWAG placers with a second in the all-around in the 11-13 age group with a 36.75 score. She won the balance beam (9.15), was sixth in floor exercise (9.2), seventh on vault (9.3) and 10th on bars (9.1).

Other placers, also in the 11-13 division, were Heidi McCullough, seventh on bars (9.2), and Ashley Hilmes, 11th in floor exercise (9.05).

Mike and Nancy Armstrong, Charlene Fairbanks and Butch Williams coach the team.

Baseball

The Boston Red Sox will conduct a tryout camp Monday at 9 a.m. at Spokane Community College. Eligible players are ages 16 to 22. Bring your own equipment. American Legion players must present written permission from their coaches.

Basketball

Perhaps the state’s two top B boys leagues, Whitman County and Bi-County, will showcase the talent of their senior stars in a one-game exhibition June 17 at St. John.

The Whitman roster includes Cory Goll, LaCrosseWashtucna; Beau Hilty-Jones, Rob Tiegs and Jon Lawton, Garfield-Palouse; Justin Roths and Babe Storment, St. John-Endicott; Terry Busch, Colton; Greg Nereim, Rosalia; and Chris Brown and Trevor Zehm, Tekoa-Oakesdale.

Playing for the Bi-County will be Pat Anderson, Bruce Janzen and Ryan Slahtasky, Almira/Coulee-Hartline; Joey Turner and Shawn Gochenour, Wilbur-Creston; Joe Holwegner, Reardan; Michael Watson, Lind; Ryan Floyd and Ray Schmidt, Sprague-Harrington; and Travis Harken, Valley Christian.

College scene

Idaho sophomore distance runner Angie Mathison was named to the 1995 GTE Academic All-America District VIII At-Large Team.

At the Big Sky Conference Championships, Mathison won the 10,000-meter run, then came back the next day to finish second in the 5,000. Mathison, from Winchester, Idaho, has a perfect 4.00 grade-point average in biology.

She is one of 10 athletes chosen from District VIII and her name will go on the national ballot to select the 1995 GTE Academic All-America Team.

Mark Hadley, who helped lead Idaho to third place at the Big Sky Conference tennis championships, was named to represent New Zealand in the World Student Games Aug. 24-Sept. 3 in Fukuoka, Japan.

Hadley, a senior from Hamilton, New Zealand, who will play both singles and doubles, was named All-Big Sky honorable mention.

Miscellany

Shelly Rewerts of Libby, Mont., has signed a letter of intent to attend Idaho and triple jump for the Vandals’ track and field team. Rewerts was all-state in the triple and long jumps as well as the 200 and 400 meters and as a member of the 1,600- and 400-meter relay teams. She was named all-state in volleyball as well.

Jeff Corkill of Spokane won the Ritzville Biathlon in a record time of 45 minutes, 27 seconds. The race consisted of an 11.5-mile bike ride, followed by a 3.1-mile run. Kelle Vigeland, also of Spokane, won the women’s race in 52:06.
